Potty Training an Adult Rescue Dog: A Patient, Proven Plan

Bella & Co. was built by a rescue household. Our founder's dogs came from hard beginnings, including a teacup chihuahua rescued from a hoarding situation, so we know firsthand: adult rescues can learn excellent potty habits. They just need structure, patience, and a setup that works with their instincts.

Start from zero, on purpose

Whatever your rescue's history, assume they've never been potty trained and start fresh. Many rescues lived in kennels, on concrete, or in chaos where "holding it" was never an option. That's not stubbornness, it's a missing skill.

The plan

• Pick one potty spot, indoors or out, and never move it during training
• Feed on a schedule so potty times become predictable
• Escort your dog to the spot after waking, eating, and playing
• Reward within two seconds of them finishing, timing is everything
• Never punish accidents. Clean them with enzyme cleaner and move on

Punishment is especially counterproductive with rescues. A dog that's scared to go in front of you doesn't stop going, they just hide it behind the couch.
