Potty Training Regression: Why Your Trained Dog Is Having Accidents Again

Few things are more frustrating than a fully potty-trained dog who suddenly starts having accidents. Before you assume the training failed, know this: regression is almost always a symptom, not spite. Dogs don't do revenge pees. Find the cause, and the behavior usually fixes itself.

Rule out medical first

Sudden accidents in a trained dog are a classic sign of urinary tract infections, bladder issues, kidney problems, or age-related changes. If the regression came out of nowhere, especially with more frequent or urgent urination, call your vet before changing anything about training.

The most common non-medical causes

• Routine changes. New work schedule, new home, new baby, new pet. Dogs are creatures of habit, and potty habits are the first to wobble.
• Stress and anxiety. Fireworks season, construction noise, a move. Anxious dogs have accidents.
• Adolescence. Dogs between six and eighteen months often test boundaries, including potty rules.
• Lingering odor. If a previous accident wasn't cleaned with enzyme cleaner, the smell keeps re-inviting your dog to the same spot.
• The setup changed. Moved the pad? New pad brand? Dogs notice, and some quietly go on strike.

The reset protocol

Go back to basics for two weeks, exactly like early training: scheduled potty trips, supervision, immediate rewards, zero punishment. Most regressions resolve quickly once the routine is airtight again.

Protect your floors while you fix it
